The two Beths – the brains behind Market Harborough's fantastic Refill Revolution market stall – have done it again. Last Thursday (6th February 2020) saw them throw open the doors of the brand new Eco Village and it already seems triumphant. Housed in the old Plumb Centre behind Kwik Fit on St Mary's Road in Market Harborough, carefully selected small local businesses have come together to shake up the way we do our weekly shop. Everyone involved has an eye on sustainability and wants to make low-impact shopping more accessible to the likes of thee and me.
Last Saturday, my sister Annie, Izzy and I all headed down to see what's what. I was delighted to see the place absolutely heaving with people bustling about all over the place. And you really can do your weekly shop under one roof – hurrah!
Refill Revolution is the go-to place if you want to ditch the plastic in your bathroom and kitchen, as well as picking up some zero-waste refills of dry foods and household liquids. Just remember your containers as they'll scoop it all directly into your own tubs/jars/bottles.
The Waterloo Cottage meat and deli counter is nestled right next door to Pearman's fruit and veg stall, where you can even find loose salad leaves! Both suppliers pride themselves on their sustainable ethics and try to keep food miles as low as possible.
There's also the Dozy Dog pet shop and the ladies there are incredibly knowledgeable, especially if your dog needs a special diet for whatever reason.
Inside the main building are a plethora of stalls, including the delectable Pudding Corner (we opted for a couple of slices of brownie this time, but everything looked delicious) and even a vending machine where you can fill up on fresh organic milk.
Windowsill Indoor Plants had some gorgeous greenery on show and I can't wait to add a few more plants to my collection once we've moved house – in fact, their beautiful displays have given me an idea for the new place, watch this space.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our trip and I'll definitely be back. The Eco Village is open from 9am to 4pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays. Do pop along next time you're in Market Harborough – or indeed head there just for this reason, you won't be disappointed!
